Abstract: We compare the democracy score and the gender ratio of different countries on Facebook and find a very strong correlation between the percentage of women on Facebook and democracy.
We use the gender data provided by the Facebook ads system for 11 countries: Lebanon, France, USA, KSA, Kuwait, Egypt, UAE, Italy, Sweden, UK and Canada.

The democracy index is retrieved from The Democracy Index 2012 from The Economist Intelligence Unit (https://www.eiu.com/public/topical_report.aspx?campaignid=DemocracyIndex12) and gender gap indexes (2012) from The Global Gender Gap Report (Hausmann, Tyson & Zahidi, 2012) from the World Economic Forum (http://templatelab.com/global-gender-gap-report/)

There is a very strong positive linear correlation (R) and a high coefficient of determination between the gender ratio and the democracy score.
The coefficient of determination is high, yet lower (70% certainty) when comparing gender ratio on Facebook and the gender gap.
It would be nice to include more countries to this exercise (when I have more time)…
